Il y a des chansons qu'on entend une fois et qui restent. Pas parce qu'elles sont belles au sens conventionnel du terme, mais parce qu'elles capturent quelque chose de vrai sur ce que c'est d'avoir peur et d'y aller quand même. Lose Yourself est de celles-là. Dès les premières secondes, cette guitare qui grogne, cette question suspendue dans l'air — une seule chance, est-ce que tu la prends ? — et on est dedans. Complètement.

Rabbit transpire sous les projecteurs

Eminem nous plonge dans la peau d'un gamin qui monte sur scène et qui se plante. Les paumes moites, les mots qui refusent de sortir, la foule qui rit. "Mom's spaghetti" est devenu une blague internet, mais dans son contexte original, ce détail grotesque dit quelque chose de poignant : c'est le repas du pauvre, le dîner d'avant une bataille qu'on n'est peut-être pas prêt à mener. Le personnage s'effondre, puis se relève. Pas glorieusement — il rentre dans sa caravane, il sait qu'il est fauché, il sait que le temps presse. Mais quelque chose en lui refuse de lâcher. Ce refus-là, têtu, presque irrationnel, c'est le cœur de la chanson.

Le refrain arrive comme une injonction. "You better lose yourself in the music" — pas une invitation douce, une sommation. Se perdre dans la musique, ici, ce n'est pas fuir. C'est au contraire la seule façon d'être pleinement présent au moment décisif. L'opportunité ne reviendra pas, et Eminem le répète avec une urgence qui ne se dissipe jamais vraiment.

Une vie entière dans trois couplets

Ce qui rend le troisième couplet dévastateur, c'est qu'il rompt le masque de la fiction. Plus de Rabbit, plus de troisième personne. C'est Eminem lui-même qui parle de tickets alimentaires insuffisants pour acheter des couches, de la honte du trailer park, de sa mère qu'il aime mais dont il doit s'éloigner pour survivre. "This may be the only opportunity that I got" — et on y croit, parce que la voix tremble juste ce qu'il faut sous la maîtrise technique.

Lose Yourself ne raconte pas une success story. Elle raconte l'instant d'avant, celui où tout est encore incertain, où l'échec est aussi probable que la gloire. C'est pour ça qu'elle résonne encore vingt ans plus tard chez n'importe qui qui a déjà eu quelque chose à prouver.
